we truly loved Le Meridien Resort on Phuket's Karon Beach, after eating
every breakfast, lunch and dinner at the resort for days on end, we
needed a change! Nearby Mr. Yong's provided exactly what we were
We first stumbled
upon Mr. Yong's when we had walked outside of the resort to inquire
about a more affordable alternative to the hotel's laundry service. We
happened upon quite a wild lady named Huong just outside the main gates
of the resort. She claimed that her family operated both the restaurant
and the adjacent launderette. Score! We dropped off our dirty clothes
and promised to come back and eat at the restaurant upon returning to
collect our laundry the following evening.
Yong's menu boasts fresh "catch of the day" fish options as well as
other spicy Thai seafood favorites. The mildly kitschy tiki vibe and
cheap drink prices sealed the deal for us!
While waiting for goods to come out of the family kitchen, Huong flirted shamelessly with the various restaurant patrons. Nearby, Mr. Yong himself (somewhat of a local celebrity) danced to the Thai pop tunes emanating from the bar's radio. Beyond the silly comic relief, the restaurant delivered tasty dishes that felt steeped in generations of tradition. Earning special mention was the fried banana dessert (pictured here) that we would seriously consider traveling back to Phuket for alone! And if that wasn't enough, the laundry service was not half bad either! Our clothes were fresh and well organized, and at prices well (well) below Le Meridien. Mr. Yong's was truly a hidden gem!
