vintage/ mid-century modern shopping

No place screams vintage quite like Palm Springs.  Well-known for its skill in attracting an aging population of elites from around the world for over 50 years, this desert oasis has collected more top-notch mid-century modern furniture, housewares and goodies than it knows what to do with!

These days, with like-minded design fanatics scouring the area for great finds to populate their many second-hand or consignment shops, Palm Springs has become a virtual mecca for hipsters looking for that next great piece to add to their groovy fashion pad back home!  Let’s put it this way.  If you are heading to Palm Springs for the weekend, you better make sure that you have left enough space in your car for that set of matching OpArt-patterned chairs - or that Sputnik light fixture - that you simply cannot leave behind!

On a recent trip to Palm Springs, we visited several cool vintage furniture stores that were located only minutes away from one another along North Palm Canyon Drive.  If it were not so hot outside, we actually would have walked, we promise!

Modern Way, M Modern Gallery and 20First Modern and Vintage each offer collectors a super-duper range of pieces that truly run the gamut in terms of style and price.  If you are on a budget, you may want to start your tour at any of these spots to get an idea of what is on offer in Palm Springs.  Mid-Century furnishings such as Eames chairs, Pantone prints, Saarinen tables and even vintage-era knock-off’s make up the lion’s share of offerings here.  (We actually prefer the knock-offs since you tend to not see them fashioned into more modern reproductions.)

Across the street, ASI had some very cool modern pieces and more unusual decorator items.  This is really a great place to buy modern furniture with a retro vibe, but remember, you get what you pay for!  Many of the designer items on sale here are priced at the top of the mark!  (Clever greeting cards that would shock even the most ribald of your friends were $6.50 USD a pop!)  More of a window shopper?  That’s okay.  Any of these Palm Springs furnishing depots will offer a number of potential decorating ideas that you can re-enact on a more modest budget back home.  So, what are you waiting for?  Put on those white loafers and stroll on in with your credit cards kids!

SHAG: The Store

Nothing says Palm Springs quite like the art of Shag.  The artist’s often tiki-inspired, Mid-century themed images are highly coveted by those who long for the lifestyle of the 1950’s/ 1960’s cocktail generation.  Shag’s artistic visions of retro glam have become so popular recently that even companies like Paul Frank and Disney have commissioned him to create one-of-a-kind pieces for their ubiquitous brands.  (Yep, that was Shag behind that cool retro line of merchandise that recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland!)

Imagine our surprise when on a routine shopping tour of Palm Springs’ main drag we discovered a store gallery devoted entirely to the artist!  The quaint space features original lithographs as well as retrospective books, stationary items, and even limited edition Shag-inspired tiki mugs!  Our mouths were watering over the Disneyland "Haunted Mansion" items that were priced just a bit beyond our budget!  Funnily enough, on the day we visited, the owner and team behind the Shag store were prepping for party that night that would unveil the artist’s latest lithograph!  Too bad it was our last day in town.  We would have loved to have met the artist and check out all of the hipsters coming out to buy the latest Shag design, but we needed to head back to Los Angeles to feed our cat!   Ahhh, next time.

SHAG: The Store is open daily from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM.  Set of Drifters tip:  Sign up for their mailing list!  Even if you live as far away as Los Angeles, the ride to Palm Springs is so quick, you could easily make the next party at SHAG: The Store an excuse to have another overnigther in town!
