Mercat dels Antiquaris

Souvenir mugs, magnets, shot glasses and postcards are fine tokens for travelers to being back from vacation, specifically for those friends or family members who are looking after your pets back at home!  However, your "Set of Drifters" believe that a true souvenir should tell a story about the place where it came from.  Doug and Brady are quite fond of thrifting in general, whether at home in California or traveling abroad.  Thus, while visiting foreign cities, they often make it a point to seek out local antique markets that sprout up during any given week.

The Mercat dels Antiquaris occurs each Thursday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in front of Barcelona's grand cathedral.  If the setting isn't inspiring enough, then the antique dealers' many exotic finds will do the job!  In a short 10-minute survey, Brady was able to find three rusty old keys, a saucy Spanish movie poster, and a number of great vintage postcards.  And that's just scratching the surface!  Looking for some iron candelabras?  No problem.  Interested in vintage costume jewelry.  They've got it!  Silver coins or religious statues?  You bet.  Do yourself a favor and mark this market in your BCN Calendar for Thursday morning!

Set of Drifters tip:  If hunger strikes while scavenging the antique stalls, there are plenty of cafes nearby to keep you going all afternoon long.

Wah Wah Records

Wah Wah is one our favorite record stores on the planet - and not just because we are good friends with the brainchild behind it!  Located on a bustling street in the heart of the risque El Raval neighborhood, Wah Wah is your one-stop shop for rare vintage vinyl (including 45s) and  import, and other hard-to-find, CDs and DVDs.  Sure, you can find the latest hipster record racing up Spanish charts at Wah Wah, but what makes the store really special is its collection of groovy out-of-print soundtracks, bossa nova, disco and personality records you'll likely find nowhere else!

For a real nice aural souvenir from Barcelona, look for records released on Wah Wah's own distribution label!   Promoting edgy new artists alongside superb-quality reissues of now scarce titles, you're bound to find the following summer's travel jam!  During your stop, be sure to tell Shakira that Dougee and Brady sent you!

Set of Drifters tip:  The neighborhood of El Raval is virtually bursting at the seams with other second hand shops and funky clothing boutiques.  You might want to carve out at least one afternoon here hobnobbing in and out of nearby restaurants and bars!
